 Re: godalming town match thread
This was probably our weakest home performance of the season, as Goldalming became the first visitors to collect three points at Champion Hill this season. It was a game we still shouldn't really have lost though, as apart from the goal I can't recall the visitors having any really clear cut chances, just a few pot shots from outside the box fielded comfortably by Wilson in goal. Hamlet reverted to more or less the same XI that gave us such a flying start to the season, with the same back four and front four plus Adeniyi pulling the strings in midfield, but our attacking play lacked sparkle.
The closest we came in the first half was from a direct free kick, the visiting keeper doing well to get across and prevent James' strike from dipping inside the top corner. I felt apprehensive about our persistent short passing, often square or backwards, inside our own half. I'm not suggesting we should simply lump the ball forward, but we often pass backwards and sideways when there are simple options to pass it forwards. I guess the aim is to suck the opposition out of their own half and create more space to attack them, but it seems a risky strategy on heavy midwinter pitches at this level, and ultimately caused our downfall.
Just before the hour mark we gave the ball away in our own half and Wilson was left exposed as a forward darted into the box and struck an angled shot across him, leaving a teammate with a simple finish on the rebound. The introductions of Kamara and Sol Pinnock from the bench livened us up a bit in attack, but frankly there were a few too many lacklustre individual performances in our ranks. A sequence of corners and crosses flashed across the goalmouth without anyone being in quite the right place to take advantage; our best chance of an equaliser came deep into stoppage time when Sol Pinnock's measured first time shot from just inside the box arrowed towards the top corner only for the keeper to pull off an astounding save at full stretch.
Team (4-4-2): Wilson - Morath-Gibbs, Duku, Goncalves(c), Carpenter - Clunis, Adeniyi, E.Pinnock, Ming - James, Sawyer. Subs: Kamara (for James), S.Pinnock (for Ming), Kadi (for Clunis), Snelling, Ofusu-Hene (not used) Attendance: 391
